Building Target Rich Doorway Pages in 6 Simple Steps
Properly
designed doorway pages can attract visitors and offer links for robots to crawl.
On the other hand, improperly
designed doorway pages may cause your site to be banned by the
search engines altogether.
Because of this, I recommend
the simple, yet conservative approach of developing one
content rich
“keyword focused” doorway page for each of your
chosen keywords and phrases. Yes,
it’s time-consuming, but the benefits of increased traffic
and happy search engines can bring you success.
That’s why you’re here, right?
So, let’s get it done!
Step
#1 -- Choose the keyword or phrase you are optimizing for the
doorway page. Don't rush this step. If
you need help, be sure to visit Goto.com and check out their
keyword Suggestion
Tool. It'll save you a pile of time.
Step
#2 -- Name your new doorway page file using the keyword as the name.
Step
#3 -- Optimize the HEAD with META TAGS:
-
Title
Tag - The title tag should begin with the targeted keyword
or phrase.
The entire title should contain between 5 and 10
descriptive words and should not exceed 200 characters.
-
Description
Tag – The
description tag should contain five to fifteen words and
should not exceed 1000 characters.
Make sure the sentence is readable and that you use your keyword or phrase
at least once.
-
Keyword
Tag – The keyword tag should contain only the keyword or
phrase in both the plural and singular form.
In all cases limit your keyword tag to a minimum of
8 words.
DO NOT create a long list
of keywords.
-
Robots
Tag – The robot tag tells the robots whether or not to
list all the pages linking from this page
(CONTENT="index,follow").
-
Comment
Tag – The comment tag normally follows the robot tag and
contains a short descriptive sentance that includes your keyword or
phrase.
Step
#4 -- Using the keyword or phrase you are optimizing, write a
heading for the page. If possible begin your title with
your keyword or phrase and be sure to use the heading
tags. For example: <H1>
Free Internet Access: Everything you should know about
free Internet access! </H1>
Step
#5 -- Write the copy for the page. This should range
between 200 and 500 words sprinkled liberally with your chosen
keyword or phrase.
Step
#6 -- Include two to three links to logical places
within the site on the doorway page. Keep in mind; some search
engines are penalizing pages that contain less than 100 words
and pages that contain only one hyperlink. Also, avoid
the use of graphics and banners on doorway pages. Keep
it simple!
In
summary, develop one content rich
“keyword focused” doorway page for each of your
chosen keywords and phrases. Stay away from graphics,
keep it simple and we'll
see you on top!
