Free
ISPs!
I found
a free ISP (Internet Service Provider) that isn't
that bad. Notice, I had a bad attitude at
first, and my first impression was to let it be.
But, after playing with it a bit, I am slowly coming
around.
It took
about ten minutes to set it up, and impatient as
usual, I jumped in with both feet. Since I was
primarily interested in another email account, I
explored that first and completely overlooked the
rest. I don't like the way they do email, and
almost wrote it off.
But,
checking it further, I found it can be used with an
offline mail reader. I downloaded two mail clients I
didn't have, and much to my surprise, both worked with
this free ISP as they use an industry standard
protocol. I didn't check it with my existing email
clients, (Eudora, Pegasus and Aureate) but do assume
they will work there as well.
Called
"Free Internet" it does work.
Revisiting it again with a better attitude, I found it
has a lot of great features, and I do recommend you
try it.
You will
have to put up with their banner ad, and I found no
way to hide it - hey, this is why it is free.
You can however, reposition their banner ad to any
position on your screen, so it tends to be less
obnoxious.
I
predict that the entire Internet will go in this
"free"
direction in the very near future, and the paid ISP
will be a thing of the past. Yes, one of my
ISP's is AOL, and not only is there a monthly fee for
their service, but we get bombarded with their ads as
well. If I'm going to get the ads, I really
question why I'm paying for the service - Steve Case -
are you listening.
Almost
forgot - you can sign up for this free ISP and get
local access at http://www.1st-free-isp.com/locator.html.
