What is an Affiliate Program?

An "affiliate program" is a way for merchants to have their products and services promoted by other "affiliate" websites who place promotional articles, testimonials, banner ads, etc. on their websites.  Merchant's benefit through increased exposure and affiliates benefit from referral fees on a pay per click, pay per lead and pay per sale basis.

To accommodate the popularity of this emerging trend a number of third-party companies have emerged to facilitate tracking and payment requirements.  Companies such as LinkShare.com, CommissionJunction.com and OnResponse.com act as a third-party liaison between the merchant and the affiliate providing merchants and affiliates with all the necessary reporting and marketing materials.  And because, these party companies host hundreds to thousands of merchant programs the need for affiliates to scour the Net looking for programs is eliminated.
